The position is available in the Design of Information Systems group. Please note that the deadline for applications is April 15.
The fellowship will be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching or other responsibilities at the Department of Information). The starting date will be no later than 01.10.2016.
The aim of the PhD position is to produce knowledge about sustainable information and communication technologies. The focus will be on the lifecycle of mobile phones in the context of the transition towards a sustainable circular economy. The successful candidate will participate in the work of an interdisciplinary team of researchers that is mapping the social and environmental hotspots in the mobile phone lifecycle and that will analyse these hotspots from a regulatory perspective. The PhD project will in addition contribute with a study of a particular aspect of the product lifecycle of mobile phones, for example, design, repair, e-waste, urban mining or re-use/recycling. This study will have a Participatory Design component and contribute to understanding the integration of sustainability issues in Participatory Design projects.
The applicants must have completed a Master’s degree in a discipline appropriate for the study of Sustainable Technology Design, such as informatics, design, anthropology, environmental studies, industrial ecology, philosophy, science and technology studies, social economics etc.
Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June 2016 to complete the final exam.
Applicants with a Master thesis topic related to the PhD project description are in particular encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in qualitative research methods. Experience with quantitative research methods, Participatory Design or an interdisciplinary approach is an advantage.
This PhD project will be part of a large EU research project (50+ researchers), which has as aim to produce reform proposals for development-friendly, environmentally and socially sustainable trade at the EU level. The successful candidate will need to be able to communicate and cooperate with colleagues in a larger research context than the PhD project and should have a fundamental interest in sustainability.
